Certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Through its program of certification, ECFMG assesses the readiness of international medical graduates and foreign medical graduates to enter US residency or fellowship programs. The process is focused around verifying your academic credentials from your home school and ensuring you pass the USMLE Exams. The process for certification is described at www.ecfmg.org
After ECFMG certification, FMG physicians who desire to practice medicine in the U.S. must complete an accredited residency training program in the U.S. or Canada, a this process that will take at least three years. The physician will have to complete a residency program regardless of the training they have received overseas. NRMP is geared towards Matching for FMG’s.
Every medical graduate must apply for a license in the state or states in which they intend to practice. Generally, you have to finish 1-3 years of residency or years of practice outside of the U.S. or Canada before applying for a license.
Always ensure you are on the right side of immigration law, which in the U.S. is governed by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a Bureau of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
